What Moves the Price of a New Floor

Two jobs with the same square footage can cost very different amounts. Here is what makes the difference. We go over each one with you so nothing on the final bill is a surprise.

We measure, look at the subfloor and talk through your options, then give you a written estimate broken out line by line. You get your quote by phone or at the walk-through, before any work starts.

The material you choose
Every type of floor has its own price range per square foot. Hardwood and porcelain usually land toward the top, carpet and laminate toward the bottom, and luxury vinyl falls in the middle. A thicker wear layer or a denser pad raises the starting cost, but it tends to buy you more years.
Square footage and layout
More floor means more material and labor. Lots of corners, closets, angled walls and doorways add cutting time and waste.
Tearing out the old floor
Old carpet and pad roll up in short order. Tile or sheet vinyl that has bonded to the slab is another story, with scraping, grinding and a lot more debris to load out.
The condition of the subfloor
Concrete slabs are common here, and they can hold moisture or have low spots. Leveling, patching or a moisture barrier adds cost but keeps the new floor from cupping, cracking or coming loose.
Stairs and transitions
Stairs are slow, careful work, one tread at a time. Transitions between rooms and different floor heights also take extra parts and labor.

Flooring We Install

We have been in business 25+ years, and we carry insurance on the work we do in your home. Every installation comes with a 1-year workmanship warranty. We install hardwood flooring, luxury vinyl plank, luxury vinyl tile, tile flooring, laminate flooring, carpet installation, carpet tile, vinyl composition tile and stair flooring, and we will tell you which ones make sense for each room.

  • Installer kneeling in a hallway, using a pneumatic nailer to fasten oak hardwood boards, with a stack of planks nearby and bare subfloor beside him

    Hardwood Flooring

Solid and engineered hardwood installed over slab or plywood, with moisture testing first and a straight answer on which wood fits your home and budget.

  • Installer kneeling on a concrete subfloor, fitting a wood-look vinyl plank into fresh rows with black spacers along white baseboards in a bare room

    Luxury Vinyl Plank

Rigid-core vinyl plank laid over a flat, dry subfloor, with the wear layer matched to your kids, pets and traffic so the floor holds up for years.

  • Tile setter kneeling to lower a large gray porcelain tile onto combed thinset, with spacers in the joints, a notched trowel and a mortar bucket beside him

    Tile Flooring

Porcelain and ceramic tile set over a flattened, crack-treated floor, with grout chosen for how much upkeep you want to do.

  • Installer kneeling on foam underlayment, tapping a brown wood-look laminate plank into place with a mallet in an empty room, with a stack of planks beside him

    Laminate Flooring

Laminate with the right wear rating and moisture resistance for each room, floated over a flat, sealed subfloor.

  • Installer kneeling on a concrete subfloor unrolling beige carpet in an empty living room, with a carpet tool and mallet nearby and the kitchen and stairs behind

    Carpet Installation

New carpet and pad, stretched tight and seamed where you won't see it, with a fiber picked for how your rooms actually get used.

  • Installer in a navy T-shirt and work boots kneels while pressing gray carpet tiles into place, with a stack of tiles and a utility knife on the floor

    Carpet Tile

Soft carpet in modular squares, so a ruined spot means swapping one tile from your spares, not pulling up the whole room.

  • Installer kneeling on a concrete subfloor, clicking wood-look vinyl planks into place beside a stack of planks, with spacers along the white baseboard

    Luxury Vinyl Tile

Stone and ceramic looks in vinyl, with the wear layer and install method matched to how hard each room gets used.

  • Installer kneeling on a concrete subfloor, clicking wood-look vinyl planks into place beside a white baseboard lined with black spacers, a stack of planks nearby

    Vinyl Composition Tile

Tough 12-inch vinyl composition tile for garages, laundry rooms and workshops, laid on a tested, leveled slab with the care routine explained up front.

  • Flooring installer kneeling on a staircase, tapping a new dark wood stair tread into place with a mallet, with plank boxes and underlayment staged on the floor beside the stairs

    Stair Flooring

New treads, risers and nosing in hardwood, vinyl plank, laminate or carpet, fitted one step at a time and matched to the floor at the top and bottom.

How a Flooring Job Runs

Most jobs follow the same few steps. We tell you what day each one happens.

  1. 1

    Start with a phone call

Tell us which rooms you want done and how you use them. We talk through a few floors that fit and set a time to come look.

  2. 2

    Measure and check the subfloor

We measure each room and check the slab or subfloor for moisture, cracks and dips. You get a written estimate that shows material, labor, prep and removal as separate lines.

  3. 3

    Prep and install

We move what needs moving, protect the rest and pull up the old floor. Then we fix the subfloor if needed and install the new floor, including trim and transitions.

  4. 4

    Clean up and final look

The old material leaves with us, and the rooms get swept and wiped down. Before we pack up, we go room by room together, cover the care basics for your new floor and settle any last questions.

How We Help You Pick a Floor That Lasts

The cheapest floor on install day is not always the cheapest floor over ten years. We show you both numbers so you can decide.

We talk about the whole life of the floor

A floor has three costs: what you pay up front, how long it lasts and what it takes to keep it looking right. We walk you through all three for the rooms you are doing. Then you choose.

We match the floor to the room

A mudroom by the back door needs something different than a bedroom upstairs. Kids, pets, wet shoes and sun through big windows all change what holds up. We ask how you use each room before we suggest anything.

We check what is under the old floor

Most new floors fail because of what is underneath. We look at the slab or subfloor for cracks, dips and moisture before we install. If something needs fixing, we show you and explain why.

We keep your home livable during the job

We cover what needs covering, keep the work area contained and clean up at the end of each day. You should be able to walk through your house at night without stepping over tools.

We give you straight answers

If a cheaper floor will do the job in a guest room, we say so. If a pricier one will save you money in the kitchen, we say that too.

Questions We Hear Most

Which floor lasts the longest for the money?
It depends on the room. Porcelain tile and good hardwood can last decades with basic care. Quality luxury vinyl plank holds up well to water and pets for a long time at a lower starting cost. Carpet usually needs replacing soonest, but it is comfortable and costs less up front. We will compare them for your rooms.
Is luxury vinyl plank a good choice for a kitchen or bathroom?
Yes, in most homes it is. Good vinyl plank handles spills and wet feet better than laminate or wood. The subfloor still has to be flat and dry, so we check that first.
Can you put a new floor over my old one?
Sometimes. Some floating floors can go over a flat, sound existing floor. But going over carpet, loose tile or anything uneven causes problems later. We will look and tell you whether removal is needed.
How long does an installation take?
One bedroom getting carpet or vinyl plank usually wraps up the same day we start. Tile runs longer since the setting material and grout need time to cure. Bigger homes, stairs and subfloor repairs add days. We give you a timeline with your estimate.
Do I need to move my furniture?
Small items, breakables and anything in closets should be cleared before we arrive. We talk through the larger furniture with you when we set the schedule, so you know what to expect on install day.
What if something goes wrong with the install later on?
Let us know and we will come look at it. Our work is backed by a 1-year workmanship warranty on all installations, which covers how the floor was put down. The product itself often has a separate warranty from its maker, and we can go over those terms for the floor you choose.
Why does moisture matter so much under a floor?
Moisture coming up through a concrete slab can make wood cup, loosen glue and grow mold under carpet. It is one of the main reasons floors fail early. We test for it and add a barrier when the floor calls for one.
